The term “hypnosis” comes from the Greek word hypnos which means sleep…but what is hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis has been defined as a special psychological state with certain physiological attributes, resembling sleep only superficially and marked by a functioning of the individual at a level of awareness other than the ordinary conscious state.
Put in simple terms, hypnosis is an altered state, a state of deep relaxation where the obstacles and barriers of the conscious mind can be by-passed, allowing the therapist to deal directly with the unconscious mind, It’s in this altered state that change work can begin.
Hypnosis is one of the most powerful psychological methods for mental and physical relaxation, making it extremely useful for dealing with things like anxiety, stress, phobias, habits and for generally getting in touch with our feelings.
Some people imagine that you are “put” to sleep and wonder if they will be able to wake up! There are many misconceptions about Hypnosis, mainly due to Stage Hypnosis shows that quite often demonstrate people doing silly things.
